Date: Mon, 22 Jan 1996 10:43:56 +0000 (GMT) From: Philip Colmer Subject: Acorn Education/ART/OM project data To: cam-all@acorn.co.uk Although the content of this email principally affects ART and OM, I have sent this to everyone to ensure that you all get an opporunity to stake your claim on any data you may have an interest in. Below is an outline of how the file servers are being restructured and where I would expect the various bits of data currently being held on oak and acorn to end up. Please note that it is my sincere hope that we can get oak and acorn turned off by the end of this month. This is a real goal that we must aim for because CSC are pressuring us hard for space in the computer room at Acorn House. So that I stand a good chance of achieving this goal, I would ask that replies be sent to me by the end of WEDNESDAY this week. Replies should consist of one of the following options: 1. An area that I've nominated for archiving should be kept on aed-work or art-work. If you choose this option, you *must* give me the name of someone who will be responsible for maintaining that area. 2. An area that I've nominated for archiving can be archived and you want to specify whether it should be tape, RISC OS CD-ROM or UNIX CD-ROM. Note that I cannot yet guarantee that we can blow a UNIX CD-ROM, so this may not be an option :-) 3. An area that I've nominated for moving to aed-work or art-work can be archived. Please specify your preferred archival method (see (2) above). 4. An area that I've nominated for moving to aed-work or art-work doesn't have a nominated carer and you want to specify that name. Thank you for your assistance with this mammoth task. --Philip File server strategy ==================== The purpose of this document is to bring to the attention of interested staff the changes that are about to take place in the file server support being provided by CSG. These changes affect the tape media that we are able to support and also which servers hold which data. The current server solution consists of: * R260s acting as personal file servers, each with an external 1Gb drive partitioned into two 0.5Gb slices. * an R260 holding DO information (earth). * an R260 holding H/W test software and some networking software (uranus). * a Sun 4/390 serving email, ftp news, and some corporate/technical data (acorn), utilising 4 1.5Gb drives. * a Sun 4/390 holding technical data and acting as the tape backup server (oak), utilising 4 1.5Gb drives and 3 2Gb drives. The plan is to migrate to Pentium-based PCs running SunSoft's Solaris, thus providing us with a common operating system across our servers (including OM's valhalla). The new division of services is as follows: mh: the new mailhost, holding the DLs and also providing FTP & WWW services. nh: the new newshost. acorn-nfs: holding the Acorn Education data. To be renamed to aed-work. art-work: holding the ART data from oak, acorn, uranus and earth. networker: the new tape backup server. In addition, there will be new planets each with a 4Gb drive, of which about 2.5Gb is free for personal data. Of the above named machines, all of them have 4Gb drives (so 2.5Gb is free) with the exception of art-work and networker which both have a 9Gb drive, so about 7.5Gb is free. As a result of moving away from the Suns, we will lose the ability to read or write 1/2inch magnetic tape and 1/4inch QIC tapes. We will still be able to read and write 2.5Gb and 5Gb 8mm tape. In addition, valhalla has a DAT tape unit on it and (I believe) a QIC tape unit. Movement of data ---------------- As a result of the server reorganisation, this would be a very good time to do some housework on what is being kept as live data. The following data needs to be archived (either onto tape or CD-ROM) or moved onto one of the new servers: Currently on oak Suggestion Reason for archiving ---------------- ---------- -------------------- /export Archive Miscellaneous shared stuff !X will move to OfficeAuto /pubs/Frame Archive No TechPubs dept /pubs/WelcomeGuides Archive Ditto /at/Cavendish art-work /at/PCEm Archive Last touched Feb 1994 /at/Pisces Archive Last touched Nov 1992 /at/PiscesBugs Archive Last touched Feb 1994 /at/TCP_IP art-work /at/build Archive Contains SHunt/MTaunton files /at/c++ Archive Old RISC iX work /at/compiler Archive Ditto /at/dbase Archive Ditto /at/ddeteam Archive Last touched 1993 /at/games Archive Old RISC iX work /at/gold Archive Dead project /at/interviews Archive Old RISC iX work /at/jaguar art-work /at/kwelton Archive No longer at Acorn /at/nfs art-work /at/pwain -> pwain /at/qrt Archive Old RISC iX work /at/riscos art-work /at/riscos_german art-work /at/riscos_src art-work /at/spooler Archive No longer required /at/ukc Archive RISC iX related work /at/usenet Archive Ditto /at/victmail Archive Victoria project mail.
